Family Literacy (NEW!)
Make reading a family event!

The Literacy Center of West Michigan (formerly known as the Kent County Literacy Council) offers complimentary tutoring, workshops and events designed to assist parents and caregivers in becoming better readers for themselves as well as their families.

Study after study shows that families who read together can help children significantly boost their vocabulary and school performance.  By the age of four, a child of a low literate parent will have heard 32 million fewer words than a child of a literate parent. If a member of your family needs help reading, we can help.

Family Literacy - Michigan Family Resources Collaboration
Our program is free and available to any parent/caregiver of a child enrolled in participating Kent County Head Start programs. Parents/caregivers are provided with weekly tutoring for two hours. Tutoring sessions can take place throughout the day in public locations, such as libraries, churches and office buildings. Also, participating families enjoy complimentary dinners, reading activities and early literacy education. For more information, please contact us at 616.459.5151 or click here.

Family Literacy Workshops
The Literacy Center can also take its popular workshop, “Help Your Child Become a Better Reader,” to your group or organization.  The
one-hour workshop includes:

  • Information/tips for reading to children, the benefits of reading to a child and how to develop a child’s interest in listening to stories.
  • The importance of questions, picture cues, predictions and story discussion.
  • Literacy activities that can be used in the home to develop and strengthen a child’s love of reading.

If you’re interested in scheduling a workshop for your group or organization, please call 616.459.5151 or click here.
