Adult
Tutoring Program – Learn
to Read and English as
a Second Language (ESL)
Can
you imagine not being able
to read?
You’d
be unable to order from
a menu, complete a job
application, navigate the
streets of a city or even
read to your child. Seem
unbelievable? Not to thousands
of area adults who have
either low literacy skills
or do not speak English
as their primary language.
Thanks
to the Literacy Center
of West Michigan (formerly
known as the Kent County
Literacy Council) learning
to read is free and available
to any adult
through our proven Adult
Tutoring Program. What’s
more, if an adult needs
assistance with speaking,
writing or comprehending
English, our popular
English as a Second Language
(ESL) tutoring service
can
help.
The
programs are designed to
proceed at the learner’s
pace. Tutoring can be provided
anytime during the day
or evening hours, at a
time that’s
convenient for an individual’s
schedule. The weekly, one
and one-half to two-hour
sessions typically extend
through a six-month period
and take place in public
areas like libraries, offices
and churches. All
of our volunteer tutors
are trained and certified,
working closely with Literacy
Center staff who have university
training in reading and
language instruction.
