My name is Tyler Archambault, and I am a recent graduate from Northern Michigan University who started tutoring for the Literacy Center to fulfill the internship requirement for part of my undergraduate degree. Prior to tutoring English for the Literacy Center, I have also tutored students in German and Mandarin Chinese.

While in the Literacy Center’s Adult Tutoring Program, I have been tutoring Zila Pitones Ramirez, a mother of two from Mexico since January 2022. During my work with Zila and my other students, I have gotten the opportunity to expand my knowledge of linguistics and teaching while also helping those living in the Grand Rapids area.

In my time at university, I had developed a strong interest in learning linguistics and teaching English as a second language. I wanted to start tutoring for the Literacy Center to begin gaining ESL teaching experience, and as I started working with the Literacy Center, I wanted to continue working for the community more and more. Soon after, I was offered a position to be an instructor for the Certified Workplace English program and have been teaching citizenship classes and workplace English classes ever since.

In the short time I’ve worked for the Literacy Center, I have learned a great deal of things from my learners and fellow team members, and I hope to continue helping Grand Rapids and the surrounding communities.
